Kitchen renovation using paint, stain for existing cabinets for a budget friendly change

Renovation in Glen Allen, Virginia

For this kitchen design, we used colors and finishes from the entire space to create interest and balance. For a more budget-friendly overhaul, we either painted or stained the existing cabinets. The existing island was replaced to offer more family gathering space, as well as to provide more space for the large, white, farmhouse sink and double stainless steel dishwashers.

Finish considerations:

  • The statement grey island and painted white cabinetry finishes update the space, with finishes contrasting with the rich wood flooring.

  • Using a third finish for the stove top created more layers and depth, and gives a finish to use for the accent beam between two spaces.

  • The bronze finish from the cook top cabinet was used for interesting over sized island pendants, creating more wow factor.

  • Bronze cabinetry hardware was also used to coordinate and contrast with bronze finish cook top cabinetry and dark finish lighting.

  • Using the bar stool finish that is the same as the cook top finish helps with another visual connection point, creating a thoughtful, cohesive space.

Keeping the family lifestyle in mind, a chalkboard and barn door combo was crafted for the family to have fun communication throughout the week.

In the living room, fabric colors were pulled from the existing kitchen window treatments, linking the spaces fluidly. White ceiling beams were added for interest and texture, along with a single wood beam between spaces.
